What is the Sports House?
Sport House is a term used to describe buildings or facilities where different parts of the sports movement gather and have their offices or activities. In Sweden, Idrottens hus often refers to the building in Stockholm where the Swedish Sports Confederation (RF) has its office together with many specialised sports federations and the study association SISU Idrottsutbildarna. Since 2016, Idrottens hus has been located at Skanstull in Stockholm in premises rented by the insurance company Folksam. Previously, the name was used for other buildings, including those in Farsta and near Stockholm Stadium, with a rich sports history.
The sports centre as a meeting place and symbol
Idrottens hus acts as a central meeting place and administrative hub for Swedish sport. It brings together federations, organisations and educational activities that work together to develop and promote sport throughout the country. The building symbolises the collective power of sport and its importance as a popular movement. It is also a place where decisions are made, strategies are designed and cooperation between different sports and organisations is developed. Bringing many actors together under one roof strengthens the joint sports movement and increases the opportunities for coordination and efficiency.
Sports centres in other Swedish cities
In addition to Stockholm, there are other facilities called Idrottens hus, for example in Helsingborg. There, Idrottens hus is a multi-arena that was inaugurated in 1957 and offers facilities for many different sports and events. This facility plays an important role for local sports and associations and is a focal point for sport and physical activity in the region. Sports centres in different cities help to strengthen the presence and accessibility of sport at local level, which is crucial for increasing participation in sport and physical activity.
